However, I did learn that Plex will look for a poster.jpg and background.jpg in the movie folder so now I keep my curated artwork with the movies themselves. I suffered the pain of using the Plex media uploader and neatly uploading all my unique posters to it but lost them all when I migrated server many years ago without first properly researching all the implications. If you are really serious about downloading and maintaining your own posters then the simplest solution is to store the posters within the movie or shows actual folder as poster.jpg and background.jpg instead of using the Plex uploader Once everything is moved, remove the old library paths and empty the trash, which will get rid of the old entries, but retain all its existing metadata. As that article points out, make sure the first item you select is the old/unavailable version, as "The first item you select is what all selected items will be merged into." That will ensure any custom metadata for that item is preserved. If there are some stubborn titles that don't want to merge, you can manually merge them together. You could create an advanced filter where 'Trash is true' and 'Duplicate is false' to look for items that are unavailable and don't have multiple versions, which could indicate an incorrect match. For others, it should show up as a duplicate, with one copy marked as 'unavailable'. There's a chance that Plex realized the same file was just renamed, and update its database accordingly. Verify that everything was updated correctly. Make sure 'Empty trash automatically' is disabledĪdd your new media location(s) to your Plex library paths. Here are the abbreviated steps I went through when reorganizing my media awhile ago: The process is outlined in this support article, and can be combined with the instructions for moving an install to another system. You should still be able to retain metadata if you change the underlying directory structure.
